TermDefinition
Anastomosis A connection between blood vessels that allows blood to flow between alternate pathways.
Aorta The largest artery in the body that carries oxygenated blood from the left ventricle to systemic circulation.
Artery A blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart under high pressure.
Atrium A thin-walled upper chamber of the heart that receives blood returning to the heart.
Ventricle A thick-walled lower chamber of the heart that pumps blood out of the heart.
Atrioventricular (AV) Valve A valve located between an atrium and ventricle that prevents backflow of blood during ventricular contraction.
Bicuspid (Mitral) Valve The left AV valve with two cusps that prevents backflow from the left ventricle into the left atrium.
Tricuspid Valve The right AV valve with three cusps that prevents backflow from the right ventricle into the right atrium.
Coronary Arteries Arteries that supply oxygenated blood to the heart muscle (myocardium).
Atrioventricular (AV) Node A cluster of specialized cardiac cells that delays electrical impulses before they pass to the ventricles.
Atrioventricular (AV) Bundle A group of fibers that conducts electrical impulses from the AV node to the ventricles.
What is the primary function of the heart? To act as a muscular pump that circulates blood through the body to maintain homeostasis.
