StudyStack 2 – Heart, Chapter, 28
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Anastomosis | A connection between blood vessels that allows blood to flow between alternate pathways. |
| Aorta | The largest artery in the body that carries oxygenated blood from the left ventricle to systemic circulation. |
| Artery | A blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart under high pressure. |
| Atrium | A thin-walled upper chamber of the heart that receives blood returning to the heart. |
| Ventricle | A thick-walled lower chamber of the heart that pumps blood out of the heart. |
| Atrioventricular (AV) Valve | A valve located between an atrium and ventricle that prevents backflow of blood during ventricular contraction. |
| Bicuspid (Mitral) Valve | The left AV valve with two cusps that prevents backflow from the left ventricle into the left atrium. |
| Tricuspid Valve | The right AV valve with three cusps that prevents backflow from the right ventricle into the right atrium. |
| Coronary Arteries | Arteries that supply oxygenated blood to the heart muscle (myocardium). |
| Atrioventricular (AV) Node | A cluster of specialized cardiac cells that delays electrical impulses before they pass to the ventricles. |
| Atrioventricular (AV) Bundle | A group of fibers that conducts electrical impulses from the AV node to the ventricles. |
| What is the primary function of the heart? | To act as a muscular pump that circulates blood through the body to maintain homeostasis. |
