QuestionAnswer
List the steps of the Scientific Method in a logical order: Problem, Research, Hypothesis, Materials, Procedure, Data Collection & Analysis, Conclusion
Purpose- What you are trying to determine, reason why you are doing the experiment
Hypothesis- a prediction of what will occur, if, then statement, uses independent, dependent variable
Problem What you are trying to determine in the experiment - in the form of a question
Qualitative- observation that focuses on the 5 senses, tends to be more general, no numbers are involved.
QuaNtitative- observation that focuses on measurement, numbers must be involved, usually takes a set of measurements over time.
Observation- objective, based on facts, has to do the with the 5 senses, does not assume anything.
Inference- subjective statement, based on knowledge of past experience, involves facts but open for interpretation, assumes what happened before or after situation.
Independent what you are testing, your choice, the factor that is not affected by anything else in the experiment.
Dependent The factor in an experiment that is being manipulated or tested
Controlled variable/Constant- The thing that stays the same
List three lab safety rules. just say it out load
What is Lavoisier known for? list of elements
. What was Dalton’s contribution to science? Atomic Theory
What did Rutherford discover? nucleus
What did Thompson discover? electrons
Name or summarize the four parts of the Atomic Theory in the space below. 1 Matter is made up of atoms 2. Individual atoms have different weights. 3. All the atoms of an element are exactly alike to each other AND different from other element’s atoms. 4. Atoms cannot be created or destroyed.
Define Matter. anything that takes up space an has mass
Define Atom. building blocks of matter
Define Element. pure chemical substance made up of only one type of atom
Explain how matter, atoms, and elements are related to each other. Atoms are the building blocks of matter, so atoms are part of matter. Elements are also part of matter but they specifically consist of one type of atom.
Define Energy. the ability to do work
Define Potential Energy and draw an example of it. Energy that is stored (top of hill)
Define Kinetic Energy and draw an example of it. type of energy that is actively doing work (dropping a ball from high)
Explain all parts of the Kinetic Theory of Matter. Matter is made up of small particles. 2. All particles are in constant motion. - Rate depends on state (gas, liquid, solid, etc.) 3. There is space between particles. - Amount of space depends on state 4. Collisions between particles transfer energy
Solid constant shape, atoms packed tightly together, cannot compress
Liquid takes shape of container, atoms have some room to move, very difficult to compress
Gas - fills up entire container, atoms fly until they hit the walls of the container, easy to compress
There are a total of 5 states of matter. List all of them in order from the lowest energy level to the highest. BEC,_Solid_Liquid_Gas_Plasma
What is the difference between a physical and chemical change? Physical change of state or change in appearance, energy in matter goes up or donw, no new substance is formed.Chemicalget a new substance, chemical reaction takes place and chemical bonds are broken and rearranged. oder, gas, heat or light is emitted
List 2 examples of a physical change. melt ice, rip paper, chop wood
List 2 examples of a chemical change. rust on shed, burn wood, lights blinking
What do the S and Q in SQ4R stand for? What are you supposed to do for them? - Survey, Q - question. S- survey - scan over the text to see how many subtitles there are. Q- turn subtitles into questions.
How do you determine how many sections an article/reading has? Count the headings.
What colors do we use in Multi-Color Highlighting? What do we use each color for? Topic - Green, Main Ideas - yellow, Supporting Details - blue, Vocab - orange, Conclusion Sentences - REd
hat types of words do we always avoid highlighting? transition words - and, is, the, because

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
