Apartheid Dutch(Afrikaans) segregated black people in South Africa and reduced their rights to avoid them overpowering the dutch
Balkanization process of a large region or states breaking down into smaller ones, bringing conflict and hostility
Balkanized having been once a part of a larger region or state
Blockbusting A process where a realtor convinces white people to sell their home at a low price (for white flight) and selling the house at a very high price to incoming colored people
Centripetal forces factors that unite people/country
Centrifugal forces factors that divide people
Ethnic cleansing forced removal of certain ethnic or cultural groups to make the society the same ethnicity
Ethnic neighborhoods Places with groups that have similar backgrounds live together
Ethnicity A cultural identity that relates to religion, language, skin color, or ancestry, or traditions
Ethnonationalism A political ideology where the nation is defined by ethnicity, promoting the interests and culture of a specific group, often aiming for a homogeneous nation-state
Genocide Mass murder of a specific demographic
Ghettos Areas of a city with poor living conditions where specific demographics were forced to live
Irredenta A place that is relevant to one culture but is controlled politically by another culture, like Jerusalem
Irredentis a territory that is historically or ethnically related to one political state but is currently under the political control of another
Multicultural Composed of 2 or more major cultures(If its in a country, probable has distinct cultures)
Mutli-ethnic state A country composed of peoples of 2 or more major cultures
Multinational state A state composed of 2 or more nations
Nationalism A sense of loyalty to a Nation Centrifugal force
Patrism A sense of loyalty to a country Centripedal force
Nationality Of or belonging to a particular country
Nation-state A Country which is predominantly composed of one nationality
Province A major administrative division in a country__Can also refer to the administrative term “provence” as a provence in a country (Ex: The provence(2) of Quebec is a provence(1) of Canada)
Nation A group of people with a strong cultural Identity : often associated with "their" land
Ethnicity A group of people with a strong cultural identity based on their cultural history and ancestry
Race A category of humans divided off of physical characteristics like skin color
Racism The belief that one race is better or worse than another race
Racist A person who beliefs that one race is superior than another race
Self-determination People or nation that govern themselves without any outside control
Sharecropper A former slave that can’t afford basic needs so they live on the owner’s land but pay a big part of their earnings to them. (Designed to always be in debt)
Shatterbelt A region caught between conflicting external powers where conflict and instability occur
Triangular slave trade A transatlantic trading system where Africans were transported to the Americas, raw materials were sent to Europe, and manufactured goods were traded to Africa
