Why did some enslaved African Americans support the British? They were promised freedom
How did women support the American Revolution? Ran farms, made supplies, carried messages, and cared for soldiers.
Who was James Armistead Lafayette? An enslaved spy who helped Americans win at Yorktown.
What did the Marquis de Lafayette do? Brought French support and helped win at Yorktown.
Why was the capital moved from Williamsburg to Richmond? More central location, population moving west, safer from British attack.
What were Virginia’s capitals in order? Jamestown → Williamsburg → Richmond.
Why was Yorktown important? It was the final major battle where the British surrendered.
How did the French help at Yorktown? Their navy blocked British ships and helped surround the British army.
Why is George Washington called the “Father of Our Country”? He led the Continental Army and set strong leadership examples.
Why is James Madison called the “Father of the Constitution”? He helped write the Constitution and Bill of Rights.
What does “We the People” show? Government gets its power from the people.
What type of government is the United States? A representative democracy.
What promise did Lord Dunmore’s Proclamation make? Freedom to enslaved people who fought for the British.
Why did many Indigenous Peoples stay neutral at first? They wanted to protect their land and avoid choosing sides.
What is a constitution? A written plan for how a government works.
What ideas from Virginia influenced the Constitution? Natural rights and freedom of religion.
What do governments exist to do? Protect people’s rights and property.
What major documents influenced the Bill of Rights? The Virginia Declaration of Rights and the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom.
What did Patrick Henry’s famous speech encourage? A spirit of independence among colonists.
