Apothecary A store where prepared meds were sold or a person who specialized in the preparation of medicines
Pharmaceutical Related to the preparation, sale, or use of a medicinal drug, it also refers to a manufactured medicinal drug
Dispence Provide medicinal drugs
Prescription An order for a medication written by a medical doctor for a pharmacist to fill
Professionalism The skills, qualities, and behavior expected from a person with higher education to perform a job
Confidentiality A requirement of Healthcare professionals to protect and respect a patients personal health information
Accountability Taking responsibility for your own actions
Cultural Competence Being aware and sensitive to diverse ethnic and social backgrounds
Attire Appropriate clothing
Medication Reconciliation Comparing patient drugs and dosages with the medical doctor’s records to prevent discrepancies
Multitasking Performing a number of tasks or activities simultaneously during a short period
Mentoring A relationship wherein a more experienced person guides a less experienced one
Technician A person with expertise in the practical application of a technology
Brand-Name Medications Trademarked medications manufactured and advertised by a pharmaceutical company
Drug Reference Guide A list of medication and prescription drug information and pill identifiers for consumers and pharmacy professionals
Policies and Procedures Written documentation used to determine decisions, actions, methods, and operations that take place within the boundaries set by the workplace
DEA Number A number assigned by the US Drug Enforcement Administration, allowing a qualified healthcare provider to prescribe controlled substances
Enunciate To say, express, or proclaim clearly
Pronunciation The way in which a word is sounded out, declared, or announced
Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) Supplies all nutrients to a patient through the veins
Compounded Medication The creation of a particular pharmaceutical product specific to a patient's needs using appropriate ingredients and processes
Barcoding Tagging the packaging of each item with a machine-readable Universal Product Code (UPC) to identify a medication
Unit-Dosing Individual doses are prepared by the pharmacy and delivered in individually labeled packets.
Computer Literacy Basic to moderate understanding of how to use a computer
Contraindication A specific situation in which a drug shouldn't be used because it's harmful to the person
Generic Medication The official name given by the Food and Drug Administration to a medication which is described by its chemical nature
Compounding Pharmacy Prepares personalized medications for patients
Infusion Pharmacy Prepares personalized intravenous medication
Nuclear Pharmacy Compounds and dispenses radioactive materials
Over-the-Counter (OTC) Medication A medication sold directly to the consumer without the need of a prescription
Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) Insurance Combines a wide range of coverages to a group; included medical professionals offer a flat monthly rate with no deductibles
Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) Insurance Allows plan participants to use doctors and hospitals they choose, not those assigned to them
Ambulatory Pharmacy "Walk-in" facilities including community, clinic, mail order, and managed care pharmacies, where customers purchase prescription or OTC medications
Community Pharmacy Large chain drugstores, privately owned pharmacies, grocery store pharmacies, and large discount store pharmacies
Clinic Pharmacy Caters to clients with insurance through HMOs or PPOs
Mail Order Pharmacy Pharmacies that use large automated dispensing machines at a main distribution center and may fill prescriptions for a three-month supply; have very little interaction with customers
Interpersonal Relating to relationships or communication between two people
Etiquette The customary code of polite behavior in society or among members of a particular profession or group
Want Book A compiled list of medications that need to be ordered by the pharmacy buyer to restock appropriately
NDC Number National Drug Code number—a unique 10-digit, 3-segment number that identifies prescription and nonprescription drugs in the United States
Lot Number An identification number assigned to a particular quantity or batch from a single manufacturer; typically found on the outside of the packaging
Automated Dispensing Machine A computerized drug storage and dispensing device located in healthcare settings like hospitals and nursing homes rather than in central pharmacy
Triage Assigning degrees of urgency to decide the order in which a situation will be treated
