define government The institution and process by which public policies are made. Governments provide law, order, and safety in a world that would otherwise be chaos.
Describe 4 essential features of a state Population, defined territory, sovereignty, and government
Evolutionary Theory “Family Networks," evolved through clans and tribes eventually becoming more complex. It takes time and it's organic.
Force Theory Government emerged when all the people of a state were put under control of one person/group. VIOLENCE
Divine Right Theory God gave the “divine right”/power to those of royal birth to rule over others. Dynastic cycle. God gave power to rule.
Social Contract Theory A gov power comes from the consent of the governed. The government's power comes from the people. Montesquieu, Hobbes, Locke.
Hobbes Needed government to control and protect. People are too selfish to govern themselves.
Locke Government should end the state of nature, protect people’s natural rights, and give people certain protections.
Autocracy Power and authority are in the hands of a single individual
Oligarchy rule by a small group of people, usually self-appointed, typically take power through force
Democracy Supreme authority lies with the people AKA popular sovereignty
Unitary Centralized power, all key powers are held by the national/central power
Confederate Multiple separate states join together to form a union of independent states, central government only has the power that states give it, confederal, rare
Federal Power is shared and divided between a national and state level, each level has sovereignty in some area, have national laws and state laws
Presidential executive and legislative totally separate + equal power, power to check and balance each other, people elect the leader of the executive branch independent from legislators - through popular election, people elect the legislative branch
Parliamentary executive branch=prime minister + his cabinet, legislative branch=parliament, executive branch is part of parliament, prime minister is the leader of the majority party in parliament
