TermDefinition
Cerebrum Definition: The largest part of the brain, made of two hemispheres. Function: Controls thinking, reasoning, emotions, voluntary movement, and senses.
Cerebellum Definition: The “little brain” at the back of the skull. Function: Controls balance, coordination, posture, and fine-tuned movements.
Brain Stem Definition: The lower part of the brain connecting to the spinal cord. Function: Controls basic life functions like breathing, heartbeat, and digestion.
Pons Definition: A part of the brainstem above the medulla. Function: Helps with sleep, breathing, facial expressions, and relaying messages.
Medulla Oblongata Definition: The lowest part of the brainstem. Function: Controls vital automatic functions like breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, and swallowing.
Parietal Lobe Definition: Upper middle part of the brain. Function: Processes touch, temperature, pain, and helps with spatial awareness.
Occipital Lobe Definition: The back of the brain. Function: Responsible for vision and interpreting visual information.
Frontal Lobe Definition: The front portion of the brain. Function: Controls decision-making, problem-solving, planning, personality, and voluntary movement.
Temporal Lobe Definition: The sides of the brain near the ears. Function: Handles hearing, memory, language understanding, and emotions.
Motor Cortex Definition: A strip in the frontal lobe. Function: Controls voluntary muscle movements.
Sensory Cortex Definition: A strip in the parietal lobe. Function: Receives and processes touch and body sensations.
Corpus Callosum Definition: A thick band of nerve fibers connecting both hemispheres. Function: Allows communication between the left and right sides of the brain.
Pituitary Gland Definition: A small hormone gland at the base of the brain. Function: Controls growth, hormones, metabolism, and other glands in the body.
Thalamus Definition: A relay station deep in the brain. Function: Sends sensory information (except smell) to the correct brain areas.
Hypothalamus Definition: A small region below the thalamus. Function: Controls hunger, thirst, temperature, hormones, sleep, and homeostasis.
Hippocampus Definition: A curved structure in the temporal lobe. Function: Forms new memories and helps with learning.
