Natural Rights "Life, Liberty, and Property"
Popular soverginity People are the Ultimate source of government power and authority.
Social contract Implied agreement among member of a society to cooperate for social benefits.
U.S Constitution Basic framework of the U.S government established limited government.
Limited Government Limits for a government that are established by a constitution or authority
Republicism A representative form of government. The people choose/elect representatives to make laws a public policy.
Federalists Support Constitution that favors a stronger central government.
Anti-Federalists Opposed Constitution, favor stronger state governments and Bill of Rights.
Great Compromise Created a two house legislature. Senate 2 per state, House based on population.
Electoral College Method for selecting the President. Some favored a citizen direct election and others favored Congress. This was a compromise between both.
Importation of slaves Compromise that Slave trade could not be banned for 20 years. South wanted to protect slave trade, The North wanted to abolish slavery all together.
3/5 Compromise Method for counting slave populations for determining population and membership in the House. Slaves count as 3/5 of a person when determining population.
Commerce Clause Expands Congressional powered by giving them power to write any law connected to business.
Necessary and proper clause Expands federal power by allowing Congress to stretch their power beyond enumerated powers.
Enumerated powers Powers written and clearly expressed in the constitution.
Implied powers Powers that are not directly written. Basis for these powers is the Necessary and Proper Clause
