| plantation | a large farm specializing in cash crops |
| indentured servant | a person contcontracted to work for 5-7 years in return for their journey to the colonies |
| slave | a person who is taken against their will and forced to a life time of servitude |
| apprentice | a person who learns a skill or trade from a professional in that area |
| town common | the center of a New England village |
| import | goods brought in from other locations |
| export | goods that are sent to other locations to sell or trade |
| agriculture | the business of farming and/or raising livestock |
| colonial assemblies | colonists elected, to speak on behalf of the people, to make laws for the colony |
| royal governor | a leader appointed by the king to enforce British rules in the colonies |
| surplus | an extra supply of goods |
| merchant | a person who buys and sells goods, a traveling trader |
| natural resources | things found in nature that are beneficial to people |
| colony | a territory settled by people from a country and controlled by that country |
