Function of Muscular System To move the body and move substances within the body
Muscle (tissues and cells) Organ, tissue, and cells which contain protein and have the ability to contract and relax to produce movement
Types of Muscle Tissue Cardiac, Smooth, and Skeletal muscle
Skeletal Muscle Voluntary, attached to bone. Cells contains multiple nuclei and is striated. Helps move our body.
Cardiac muscle Involuntary, found in our heart. Cells contains a single nucleus and is striated. Pumps blood through our body
Smooth muscle Involuntary, found in the walls of hollow organs. Cells contain a nucleus and are not striated. Moves substances through our body.
Tendons Connective tissue, attaches muscle to bone.
Red Bone Marrow A soft tissue inside the bone that produces blood cells (red, white, and platelets)
Joint A place where two bones meet
Ligament Connective tissue that connects bone to bone
Cartilage A connective tissue that is more flexible than bone and that protects the end of bones and keeps them from rubbing together
Homeostasis Maintaining a stable internal environment
Yellow bone marrow Stores fat
Bone Living tissue that serves as the main structure and support material of the body
Structures required for a function joint Bones, ligaments, and cartilage
Primary proteins in muscles Actin and Myosin
Two molecules required for muscle contraction Calcium and ATP
Levels of Organization (small to large) Cells --> Tissues --> Organs --> Organ Systems --> Organism
