TermDefinition
Cerebrum The largest part of the brain; controls thinking, learning, memory, and voluntary movement.
Cerebellum Helps with balance, coordination, and smooth movements.
Brain stem Controls basic life functions like breathing, heart rate, and digestion.
Pons Helps relay messages and controls breathing and sleep.
Medulla oblongata Controls automatic functions like heartbeat, breathing, and blood pressure.
Parietal lobe Processes touch, temperature, and spatial awareness.
Occipital lobe Responsible for vision and visual processing.
Frontal lobe Controls decision-making, planning, emotions, and voluntary movement.
Temporal lobe Helps with hearing, language, and memory.
Motor cortex Controls voluntary muscle movements.
Sensory cortex Receives and processes touch and body sensation information.
Corpus callosum A bundle of nerves connecting the two brain hemispheres.
Pituitary gland The “master gland” that controls hormones and growth.
Thalamus Sends sensory information to the correct parts of the brain.
Hypothalamus Regulates hunger, temperature, thirst, and hormones.
Hippocampus Important for forming new memories and learning.
Wernicke’s Area The part of the brain that helps you understand language.
Broca’s Area The part of the brain that helps you produce speech and talk.
Gyrus / Gyri The raised folds on the surface of the brain.
Sulcus / Sulci The grooves or valleys between the brain folds.
Amygdala Controls emotions, especially fear and anger.
Olfactory Bulbs Help you smell.
Limbic System A group of brain parts that control emotions, behavior, and memory.
Corpus Callosum Connects the left and right sides of the brain.
Pineal Gland Controls sleep by releasing melatonin.
Midbrain Controls movement, vision, hearing, and alertness.
Brachial Plexus A network of nerves that sends signals to the shoulder, arm, and hand.
Ulnar Nerve Controls feeling and movement in the pinky and ring finger.
Radial Nerve Controls movement and feeling in the back of the arm and hand.
Median Nerve Controls movement and feeling in the thumb, index, and middle fingers.
Sciatic Nerve The largest nerve; runs from the lower back down the leg.
Brain The body’s control center.
Spinal Cord Sends messages between the brain and the rest of the body.
