Cerebrum The biggest part of the brain; responsible for thinking, learning, a memory, emotions, and voluntary movement.
Cerebellum Controls balance, coordination, and fine motor skills.
Brain Stem Connects the brain to the spinal cord; controls automatic life functions like breathing and heart rate.
Pons Part of the brain stem; helps regulate breathing and is involved in sleep and relaying messages.
Medulla Oblongata Controls vital involuntary functions like breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure.
Parietal Lobe Processes touch, temperature, pain, and helps with spatial awareness.
Occipital Lobe vision
Frontal Lobe Controls decision-making, planning, personality, movement, and problem-solving.
Temporal Lobe Handles hearing, language, and memory.
Motor Cortex controls voluntary muscle movements
Sensory Cortex (Somatosensory Cortex) Processes information about touch, pressure, pain, and temperature.
Corpus Callosum A large bundle of nerve fibers that connects the left and right hemispheres of the brain.
Pituitary Gland The "master gland"; releases hormones that control growth, metabolism, and other glands in the body.
Thalamus The brain's relay station; sends sensory information (except smell) to the correct brain areas.
Hippocampus Important for forming new memories and learning.
Central Nervous System (CNS) The main control system of the body; made up of the brain and spinal cord.
Brain The organ that controls thoughts, memory, emotions, movement, and body functions.
Spinal Cord A long bundle of nerves that sends messages between the brain and the rest of the body.
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) All the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord; connects the CNS to the body.
Brachial Plexus A network of nerves that controls the shoulder, arm, and hand.
Ulnar Nerve A nerve that runs down the arm to the hand; controls the pinky and ring finger.
Radial Nerve A nerve that controls movement and feeling in the back of the arm and hand.
Median Nerve A nerve that controls the thumb, index, and middle fingers; important for hand movement.
Sciatic Nerve The largest nerve in the body; runs from the lower back down the legs.
Wernicke’s Area Responsible for understanding spoken and written language.
Broca’s Area Responsible for producing speech and forming words.
Gyrus / Gyri Raised folds on the surface of the brain.
Sulcus / Sulci Grooves or indentations between gyri.
amygdala anger and fear, fight or flight
hypothalmus temperature, hunger, thirst, hormones
Olfactory Bulbs Process smell information.
Limbic System A group of structures involved in emotion, motivation, and memory.
corpus callosum Connects the left and right hemispheres of the brain.
Pineal Gland Releases melatonin; controls sleep-wake cycles.
mid brain Controls reflexes related to vision and hearing.
