Tectonic plates/🌎

Science Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Tectonic Plates Large pieces of Earth’s crust that slowly move around like giant puzzle pieces.
Convergent Boundary A place where two tectonic plates move toward each other and can form mountains or volcanoes.
Divergent Boundary A place where two tectonic plates move away from each other, creating new crust.
Fossil The preserved remains or traces of plants or animals that lived long ago.
Crust The thin, outer layer where we live. It’s like the skin of an apple.
Mantle The thick layer under the crust made of hot, soft rock that moves slowly.
Outer Core A layer of liquid (melted) iron and nickel.
Inner Core The solid center of the Earth made of very hot, dense iron and nickel.
Plate tectonics The theory that erth's plates are always movingand changinging the planet's surface
Deep Ocean trench A long deep crack in the ocean floor where one plate sinks beloww another.
Mid-Ocean Ridge An under water mountainchain wherre new crust is made.
Subduction When one plate sinks under another plate
James Wegener Scientist who proposed the idea of continental drift. He said that the continents were once joined together in one big landmass called Pangaea and slowly moved apart over time.
Continental drift The idea that Earth’s continents were once joined together in one large landmass and slowly moved apart over millions of years.
Pangaea supercontinent where all Earth’s land was once joined together.
Ocean floor The rocky surface at the bottom of the ocean.
Sea-floor spreading 🌋 The process where new ocean crust forms as magma rises and pushes plates apart.
Rock age 🪨⏳ How old a rock is, based on when it formed.
Index fossil An index fossil is a fossil of a plant or animal that lived for a short time but was found in many places.
Geologic time scale The geologic time scale distinguishes Earth's history based on life-forms that existed at certain times since the planet's formation.
