2. What factors led to conflict in the Ohio Valley? (French and Indian war) 2. The British and French had land that was there, and Fort Duquesne was built to get rid of the French.

Proclamation of 1763, What was it? a law made by the British that did not let colonists settle west of the Appalachian mountains.
Proclamation of 1763 Why did England make this law? after the French and Indian war, the British wanted to separate Native Americans so that they could have a better relationship
Proclamation of 1763 How did colonists respond to it? they were not happy at all, and ignoring the proclamation completely, continuing to move west.
Stamp Act What did it tax? added a tax on all paper used.
Stamp Act Why did England pass it? to pay off debts that the French and Indian War caused.
Stamp Act How did colonists respond? protested, made boycotts, forcing it to repeal by making the group the Sons of Liberty.
“No taxation without representation” What does this mean? Colonists got taxed by the British without any representatives to say anything or vote about it.
“No taxation without representation” Where did colonists want representation? The British Parliament
Quartering Act What did it tax? it made the colonists house and feed the British soldiers that were there.
Quartering Act Why did England pass it? they needed housing and food for the British soldiers
Quartering Act How did colonists respond? they were enraged and saw it as violating their rights.
Townshend Act What did it tax? glass, paint, tea, lead, and paper
Townshend Act Why did England pass it? because after the Stamp Act, they still needed to pay the huge debt.
Townshend Act How did colonists respond? more protests, boycotts, and “no taxation without representation”
Boston Massacre What happened? British soldiers shot a crowd of Bostonians, in which killing 5 colonists and injuring 10.
Boston Massacre Why did it happen? after the Townshend Acts, colonists formed a mob because they felt they were not represented in Parliament.
Tea Act What did this law do? imposed a law on taxing tea
Tea Act Why did England pass it? the British East India Company was in crippling debt and needed to pay it so they put the tax
Tea Act How did colonists respond? So angry that the Boston Tea Party happened
Boston Tea Party What happened? colonists threw boxes of tea into the ocean .
Boston Tea Party Why did it happen? they hated the law so much, they thought it was ridiculous.
Intolerable Acts What did this law do? It closed off Boston Harbor to all shipping until the ruined tea was paid off, and that it made Massachusetts fully under control of the British
Intolerable Acts Why did England pass it? they thought it would bring peace
Intolerable Acts How did colonists respond? they sent a respectful message to King George, hoping he would consider their rights and repeal the law
Battle of Lexington & Concord What is the significance of the events at L & C? It showed that the American colonists would not give up.
Declaration of Independence Who wrote it? Thomas Jefferson
Declaration of Independence What was its purpose? to declare independence from England
Declaration of Independence What did it lead to? the Revolutionary War, and then independent states
Patriot a person who supported the American side of the war. (lower class people)
Loyalist a person who supported the British side of the war. (higher class people, did not want their land taken away)
ally A nation that joins another nation for some common effort, such as war.
act the things that King George III did after the colonies did certain things.
militia an army (small) made up of ordinary citizens ready to fight in an emergency
tyranny when a government uses its power in an unfair way. (tyrant is a person who does that)
repeal to cancel or take back a law
boycott to refuse to buy something from a certain supplier/source.
consent permission
Sons of Liberty / Daughters of Liberty groups that organized against British polocies that permitted tax on certain goods.
