| Term | Definition |

| Node | A point on the string that never moves during vibration. |
| Antinode | A point on the string that moves with maximum amplitude. |
| Mode number (m) | The number of loops or segments in the standing wave. |
| Fundamental frequency | The lowest frequency at which the string vibrates, forming one loop. |
| Wavelength | The distance over which the wave repeats itself, on a string |
| Reflection | When waves bounce back off an obstacle |
| Length | The size of the column in which the standing wave occurs |
| Standing waves | A wave that is trapped and cannot move. |
