Unit 2 Lesson 1

Plant Survival

TermDefinition
Stomata Spores in the bottom of leaves that open and close to let in or give off gases (oxygen, carbon dioxide, water vapor)
Xylem The plant tissue through which water and minerals move up from the roots.
Transpiration The evaporation (release) of water vapor (gas) through the stomata of a plant
Phloem The plant tissues that transport food (glucose) from the leaves to the rest of the plant.
Roots The part of a plant that absorbs water and nutrients from the ground. Anchor the plant and can sometimes store food.
Stem The part of a plant that transports water from the roots to the leaves. It also holds the plant up toward the sun and transports food and nutrients.
Leaves The part of a plant where food (glucose) is made using water, carbon dioxide, and energy from the sun through a process called photosynthesis.
Flowers The reproductive structure of a plant. If pollinated, a fruit/seed will form. The seed will sprout to form a new young plant.
Energy The ability to do work or change something
Seed Dispersal Ways that seeds are spread to help give plants space. Examples: Wind, Water, Animals, Explosive
Photosynthesis The food making process that occurs mainly in the leaves of plants. The plant uses water, carbon dioxide, and energy from sunlight to make food (glucose) for the plant.
