| typical behaviors | ways of acting or responding that are common at each stage of childhood |
| caregivers | parents and others who tend to children |
| Stimulation | any activity that arouses a baby’s sense of sight, sound,touch, and smell |
| Sequence | an order of steps |
| Heredity | the biological transfer of certain characteristics from earlier generations |
| Environment | refers to the people, places, and things that surround and influence a person, including family, home, school, and community |
| Human life cycle | development that continues from birth to death in stages |
| Developmental tasks | Each stage presents different challenges that must be met or skills to be acquired |
| Frequency count | A tally of how often a certain behavior occurs. |
| Baseline | A count made before any steps are taken to try to change the behavior. |
| Developmental Checklist | A list of skills and behaviors children should exhibit at certain ages. |
| Confidential adoption | the birth parents don’t know the names of the adoptive parents |
| Open adoption | the birth parents and adoptive parents know something about each other |
| Sexuality | A person's view of himself/herself as a man or woman |
| Hormones | changes as teens become sexually mature |
| STDs | a disease spread from one person to another by sexual contact |
| Abstinence | avoiding sexual activity all together |
| Paternity | legally identifies the man as the father and his responsibilities towards the child |
| Foster Children | Children, typically from troubled families or those in difficult circumstances, who are placed in the temporary care of another person or family |
| Intergenerational | relationships between older and younger age groups |
| Interpretation | in observing children, the analysis an observer forms and expresses about what was observed |
| Confidentiality | protection of another person’s privacy by limiting access to personal information |
| Nuclear family | includes a mother and father and at least one child |
| Single parent family | includes either a mother or a father and at least one child Custodial parent: the one with whom the child residences |
| Blended family | Formed when a single parent marries another person, who may or may not have children. |
| Extended family | Includes a parent or parents, at least one child, and relatives other than the parents who live with them. |
| Legal guardian | A person who is designated by a legal process to assume responsibility for raising a child. |

| Conscience | an inner sense of what is right and wrong that prompts good behavior and causes guilt following bad behavior |
| Deprivation | Not having critical needs met due to an environment that does not provide what is necessary for physical, emotional, and intellectual well-being |

| Guidance | Using firmness and understanding to help children learn how to control their own behavior. |
