Elements, Compounds and Mixtures

TermDefinition
element A pure substance made of only one kind of atom
compound A substance made of two or more different elements chemically joined together
mixture A combination of substances that are mixed together but NOT chemically joined
examples of elements oxygen (O), gold (Au)
examples of compounds water (H₂O), salt (NaCl)
examples of mixtures trail mix, air, salad
homogenous mixture mixture that looks the same throughout, particles are uniformly distributed
heterogenous mixture mixtures that looks like it is composed of different substances, particles are NOT uniformly distributed
