| Theme | The overall BIG IDEA of a piece of writing |
| Symbolism | An object or phenomenon (like fire, the ocean, etc.) that represents a person or idea |
| Claim | May also be referred to as the Thesis statement; it is the main argument of a piece of writing in order to prove the point. |
| Denotation | the specific, logical meaning of a word |
| Connotation | the ideas or feelings associated with a word |
| Evidence (in literature) | Any quotes from the work; scientific facts; the expert opinion; etc. |
| Paraphasing | using the author's ideas but restating them in your own words; you still need to give proper credit to the author in your citations for their original ideas |
| Objective | Unbiased point of view; facts |
| Subjective | based on a person's feelings, not facts |
| relevant | something that is connected to the subject, on point, appropriate and helpful |
