QuestionAnswer
What is interphase The period of cell growth, DNA replication, and normal functions
what occurs during prometaphase Nuclear envelope fragments and spindle fibers attach to kinetochores
What is the centrosome? The microtubule-organizing center of animal cells
What is cell division? The process by which a parent cell divides into two daughter cells
What are somatic cells? All non-reproductive body cells
What happens during prophase? Chromosomes condense, the nuclear envelope begins to break down, and spindle fibers start to form
What is chromatin? DNA wrapped around histone proteins in a less-condensed form
What happens during G2? The cell finishes growing and prepares for mitosis
What is a cleavage furrow? A contractile ring of actin that pinches the cytoplasm during animal cell cytokinesis
What defines telophase? Chromosomes fully uncoil, nuclear envelopes reform, and spindle fibers disassemble
What is the cell plate A structure that forms during plant cell cytokinesis to create a new cell wall
What happens during G1? The cell grows and carries out normal metabolic functions
What are sister chromatids? Identical copies of a chromosome attached at the centromere
What is mitosis? Division of the nucleus to produce genetically identical daughter nuclei
What is a chromosome? A single DNA molecule tightly coiled and condensed
What happens during anaphase? Sister chromatids separate and move toward opposite poles
Centromere The region where sister chromatids join
What happens during S phase? DNA is replicated to form sister chromatids
What defines metaphase? Chromosomes align along the cell’s equatorial plane
What is the best definition of the cell cycle? The series of events that cells go through as they grow and divide
What is cytokinesis? The division of the cytoplasm into two daughter cells
What are centrioles? Structures that help organize microtubules during cell division

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
