Ancient Rome Vocab

QuestionAnswer
Forum The government and religious center of a Roman city, an open-air meeting area surrounded by buildings and markets.
Rostrum A raised platform from which speeches were delivered.
Cardo The main north-south road running through a Roman city.
Decumanus The main east-west road through a Roman city.
Insula A Roman city block, usually square or rectangular, about 80 by 40 yards in size.
Pomerium An open strip of land along the inner face of the city wall, considered a spiritual boundary.
Arc (Arch) A carved structure supporting weight, typically curved.
Keystone The central locking stone at the top of an arch.
Portcullis A metal or timber grill that could be lowered to seal off city gates.
Crenellations Alternating high and low sections of stonework atop defensive walls, allowing defense.
Tunnel Vault . A continuous semicircular ceiling or roof structure.
Aqueduct A pipeline built to carry water, operating on gravitational flow.
Cloaca A large underground sewer tunnel.
Colonnade A row of columns supporting a horizontal beam or roof.
Reservoir A large natural or artificial lake used for water storage.
Triumphal Arch A brick-faced concrete structure covered with colored marble, erected to celebrate military victories or emperors.
Thermae (Public Baths): Complex facilities with multiple specialized rooms:
Markets: Areas with merchant stands, shops, shrines, and fountains for public use.
Public Fountains Structures providing drinking water to inhabitants.
Amphitheater Oval arena fully surrounded by rising rows of seats, used for entertainment such as gladiatorial games.
Theater Buildings or outdoor arenas where plays and performances were conducted.
City Walls Comprise an inner wall (taller than outer walls) and an outer wall extending 30 feet underground.
Crenellations Top stonework on defensive walls with alternating high and low sections to protect defenders.
Portcullis Defensive gate mechanism to secure the city entrances.
Reservoirs Natural or artificial lakes storing water to ensure supply continuity.
Keystone Central stone locking the arch, critical for structural integrity.
Colonnade Rows of columns that support roofs or beams, often used in public buildings and temples.
Tunnel Vault Continuous curved ceiling or roof providing strong and durable overhead structures.
