What is the primary function of red blood cells? To transport oxygen using hemoglobin and carry carbon dioxide from tissues to the lungs
What is the role of the sinoatrial node? It acts as the pacemaker of the heart by initiating electrical impulses that control heart rate
Which type of blood vessel has the thickest walls and why? Arteries, because they must withstand high pressure from blood pumped by the heart
What is the main function of the lymphatic system? To return excess tissue fluid to the bloodstream and support immune defense
Where does gas exchange occur in the lungs? In the alveoli through diffusion of oxygen and carbon dioxide
What is the primary function of the small intestine? To complete digestion and absorb nutrients into the bloodstream
What is one major function of the liver? It detoxifies blood and produces bile for fat digestion
What are the body’s three main energy sources? Carbohydrates, fats, and proteins
What is the main function of the kidneys? To filter waste from the blood and regulate fluid and electrolyte balance
Why is sodium important in the body? It helps regulate fluid balance, nerve impulses, and muscle contraction
What is the normal pH range of blood? 7.35–7.45
What is the function of testosterone? It stimulates sperm production and the development of male secondary sex characteristics
What is the function of the ovaries? To produce eggs (ova) and secrete estrogen and progesterone
What is the function of the placenta? It provides oxygen and nutrients to the fetus and removes waste products
What is a dominant gene? A gene that expresses its trait even when only one copy is present
What is the function of the retina? The retina contains photoreceptors (rods and cones) that convert light into nerve impulses for vision
What is the function of the cochlea? The cochlea converts sound vibrations into electrical nerve signals for hearing
What is the primary function of insulin? Insulin lowers blood glucose by allowing cells to take in and store glucose
