| Torrid | Very hot or dry; full of difficulty or tribulation. |
| Bumble | Move or act in an awkward or confused manner; speak in a confused or indistinct way. |
| Somberly | To do something in a sad, serious, gloomy, or dark way. |
| Unassailable | Unable to be attacked, questioned, or defeated. |
| Dubious | Hesitating or doubting; not to be relied upon; suspect. |
| Construe | Interpret (a word or action) in a particular way. |
| Belligerence | Aggressive or warlike behavior. |
| Loath | Reluctant; unwilling. |
| Hamper | A large basket with a lid used for laundry; to hinder, impede, or restrict its movement, progress, or action. |
| Bastion | A projecting part of a fortification built at an angle to the line of a wall, so as to allow defensive fire in several directions; an institution, place, or person strongly defending or upholding particular principles, attitudes, or activities. |
