Unit 5 Solar System

TermDefinition
Gravity force of attraction between two objects due to their masses
Habitable Zone distance from a star at which liquid water could exist on orbiting planets' surfaces
Kuiper Belt a circumstellar disc consisting mainly of small icy objects in the outer Solar System, extending from the orbit of Neptune at 30 astronomical units (AU) to approximately 50 AU from the Sun
Meteor a small rocky or metallic body in outer space, also called meteoroids, that are significantly smaller than asteroids and range in size from small grains to one-meter-wide objects
Oort Cloud a theoretical concept of a cloud of predominantly icy planetesimals proposed to surround the Sun at distances ranging from 2,000 to 200,000 astronomical units, or AU (0.03 to 3.2 light-years), defining the boundary of the Solar System
Revolution one complete trip of a planet around the Sun
Rotation the spinning of a planet or moon on its axis
Asteroid minor planet of the inner Solar System; any astronomical object orbiting the Sun that did not resolve into a disc and does not have characteristics of an active comet such as a tail
Comet an icy, small solar system body that, when passing close to the Sun, warms and begins to release gases that produce a visible atmosphere, or coma, and sometimes also a tail
Moon an astronomical body that is a natural satellite orbiting a planet, dwarf planet, or small solar system body
Physical Property observable characteristic of matter that can be used to identify particular materials
Planet a non-stellar body that is massive enough to be rounded by its own gravity, directly orbits a star, and has cleared its orbital zone of competing objects
Solar System system consisting of the Sun and a collection of objects of varying sizes and conditions—including planets and their moons—that are held in orbit around the Sun by its gravitational pull on them

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
