Where do carbohydrates come from? All carbohydrates come from plant sources only,thought the process of photosynthesis,which is when plants use sunlight and carb dioxide gas from the air to make their own food. We then eat these plants as carbohydrates.
What is the elemental composition of carbohydrates? Carbon,hydrogen,oxygen.
What do the elements in carbohydrates do? They combine to make simple sugars e.g glucose. These simple sugar units link or combine together to form long chains of starch.
What happens during digestion of a carbohydrate? During digestion,these long chains of starch and broken down by enzymes into simple sugars (e,g glucose) so that they can be used by the body.
What are the classification of carbs? Sugar,starch,dietary fibre.
What are the sources of each? Sugar: table sugar,honey,jam,soft drinks, Starch: bread,pasta,flour,potatoes. Dietary fibre: whole cereals,fruit and veg,whole meal bread.
What are the functions of carbohydrates? Carbohydrates supply most of the body’s heat and energy,excess carbohydrates are stored as fat (adipose tissue) that insulates body. Dietary fibr helps for movement of waste through intestines,prevents constipation and diseases of bowel e,g bowel cancer
What is sugar? Sugar is a form of carbohydrate that can be called glucose,fructose,sucrose,and maltose.
What are empty calorie foods? High sugary foods e,g cakes,biscuits,fizzy drinks because they provide kilocalories but few other nutrients.
How can sugar be listen Ona. Food label? Glucose,fructose,sucrose,honey,treacle.
How much calories does carbohydrate provide? Per 1g of carbohydrates provides 4kcal or 17kg of energy.
How to reduce sugar in diet? Avoid sweets,cakes,biscuits and desserts, Replace sugary snacks e,g chocolate with nuts and fresh fruits. Replace sugary drinks with milk or water Use artificial sweeteners e.g solemda instead of table sugar for baking etc.
What is dietary fibre Dietary fibre is also called roughage or cellulose, fibre is found in unprocessed foods such as whole grain cereals,fresh fruits and vegetables.
What are the functions of fibre Fibre absorbs water as it passes through the digestive system,bulging up waste allowed it to pass through intestines easily to prevent constipation,fibre helps to prevent diseases of bowels,foods high in fibre give feeling of fullness,provides bulk indiet
How do you increase fibre in your diet? Avoid refined carb foods e,f white flour eat whole grain carbs e.g brown bread instead of white.eat plenty of raw fruits and vegetables with skin of where possibles,eat nuts or dried fruits e.g raisins,apricots,prunes.
