Unit 5.2: Air & Land
Air & land pollution
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Biological Pest Control | The use of organisms to eliminate or control pests. |
| Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) | Chemicals that are used in manufacturing which can get into the Ozone layer and cause it to be depleted; leaving Earth vulnerable to harsh solar radiation. |
| Climate | The average weather conditions in an area over a very long period of time. |
| Compost | Partially decomposed organic plant and animal matter used as a soil conditioner or fertilizer. |
| Deforestation | The removal of trees faster than forests can replace themselves. |
| Desertification | The process by which fertile land becomes desert, typically as a result of drought, deforestation, or inappropriate agriculture. |
| Genetic Engineering | The process of making changes in the DNA code of living organisms |
| Global Warming | An increase in the average temperature of the earth's atmosphere (especially a sustained increase that causes climatic changes) |
| Greenhouse Gases | Gases in Earth's atmosphere that trap heat near the surface causing the average temperature of Earth to increase. |
| Heat Island | An area in which the air temperature is generally higher than the temperature of surrounding rural areas. |
| Kyoto Protocol | An amendment to the international treaty on climate change designed to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases emitted by developed countries. |
| Montreal Protocol | A meeting in 1987 where a group of nations met in Canada and agreed to take steps to fight against Ozone Depletion where CFC's were banned. |
| Ozone Hole | The area of lowered ozone concentration over Antarctica |
| Ozone Layer | Layer of the stratosphere with a high concentration of ozone that absorbs most of the Sun's harmful ultraviolet radiation. |
| Primary Pollutant | A pollutant that is put directly into the atmosphere by human or natural activity |
| Scrubber | A device that removes pollutants or changes them chemically before they leave factory smokestacks |
| Sick Building Syndrome | Headaches, allergies, chronic fatigue and other symptoms caused by poorly vented indoor air contaminated by pathogens or toxins. |
| Secondary Pollution | Formed when primary pollutants undergo a variety of reactions with other chemicals already in the atmosphere |
| Smog | Air pollution by a mixture of smoke and fog |
| Temperature Inversion | An atmospheric condition in which warm air traps cooler air near the earth's surface |
