Autonomous Region an area within a country with significant self-governance, making its own political/cultural decisions, often due to distinct identity
Berlin Conference illustrates how political boundaries can be drawn without regard for existing ethnic or cultural divisions
Centrifugal Force a factor that divides a country, pulling it apart
Centripetal Force A factor that brings a country together
Devolution the transfer of political power and authority from a central government to regional or local governments, giving them more control over their own affairs
Exclusive Economic Zone EEV: 200 miles from a coast
Federal State a country that divides political power between a strong central government and regional (state or provincial) governments
Geometric boundary A political border defined by a line or shapes
Gerrymandering manipulating electoral district boundaries to favor a political party or group
Multinational State is a country containing two or more distinct nationalities or ethnic groups
Nation-state the ideal political unit where the boundaries of a sovereign state (country/government) perfectly align with the cultural borders of a nation
Neocolonialism the use of economic, political, and cultural pressures by powerful nations/corporations to control or influence former colonies
Relic Boundary a political boundary that no longer functions as an official border but remains visible on the landscape and has historical or cultural significance
Shatterbelt a region caught between larger, competing external powers
Stateless nation group of people with a common culture, history, and language that does not have their own independent state
Superimposed Boundary a political border forced onto a region by an external power, ignoring existing cultural, ethnic, or social patterns
Supranational Organization a group of three or more countries that join forces for economic, political, military, or environmental goals, requiring members to give up some sovereignty to a higher governing body for shared benefits like economic power or security
Tariffs a tax imposed by a government on imported goods and services, used to generate revenue or protect domestic industries from foreign competition
