Unit 2 Political Participation Linkage Institutions

QuestionAnswer
Incumbency Advantage The benefits that current officeholders (incumbents) have over challengers in an election, such as name recognition.
Caucuses (A type of primary election) Local, in-person meetings held by political party members to discuss and vote for their preferred presidential candidate.
Open Primaries Primary elections in which any registered voter can participate, regardless of party affiliation. Voters may choose which party’s primary to vote in.
Closed Primaries Primary elections in which only registered members of a political party may vote in that party’s primary.
Electoral College Each state has a certain number of electors based on its representation in Congress. A candidate needs a majority of electoral votes (270) to win out of 538..
National Popular Vote The total number of votes cast for a Presidential candidate across the entire country, regardless of state boundaries.
Winner-Take-All A system used by most states where the candidate who wins the popular vote in that state receives all of the state’s electoral votes.
Third Parties Third parties can influence elections by introducing new ideas or drawing votes from major candidates.
