Gastrointestinal Tract (Gi) A long winding tube
Oral Cavity The mouth; Starts digestion by chewing and saliva
Pharynx Throat; passage for food to the esophagus
Epiglottis Flap that keeps food out of the airway when swallowing
Esophagus Tube that moves food to the stomach
Stomach Organ that mixes food with acids and enzymes
Small intestine Main site of digestion and nutrient absorption
Duodenum First part; receives bile and enzymes
Jejunum Middle part; absorbs most nutrients
Ileum Last part; absorbs B12 and bile salts
Cecum First part of colon; connects to illeum
Colon/Large intestine Absorbs water and forms stool
Ascending colon Upward section; absorbs water
transverse colon horizontal section
Descending Colon Downward section
Sigmoid colon S-shaped section leading to rectum
Rectum Stores Stool before elimination
Anus Opening where waste leaves body
Salivary glands produces saliva with digestive enzymes
Teeth Breaks food into smaller pieces
Tounge Moves food and helps swallowing, allows taste
Uvula Tissue that helps swallowing and speech
Liver Makes bile and processes nutrients
Pancreas Makes digestive enzymes and bicarbonate
Appendix Immune tissues; stores helpful bacteria
Upper Esophageal (Cardiac) Sphincter Opens to let food enter esophagus
Lower esophageal (Cardiac) Sphincter Keeps stomach acid out of esophagus
Pyloric Sphincter Controls food leaving the stomach into the duodenum
