| crusades | A series of Wars fought between the Christians and the Muslims over the holy land from 1100 to 1250. The Crusades open up trade between Europe and the Far East |
| line of demarcation | Imaginary line drawing around the world by Pope Alexander VI to separate lands that Spain( west of the line) in Portugal( east of the line) could claim |
| monopoly | . When someone controls a product that is traded. The Italian merchants and Venus and Genoa had a Monopoly and the spice train. This caused other nations to send out explorers so they could find their own route and not pay the Italians high prices. |
| colonies | Settlements and other lands still controlled by the home Nations., portugal, spain france and later england setup counties in the new world |
| circumnavigating | To sail around the world Magellan (his crew) was the first to do this for Spain. this proved the world was round |
| conquistador | A Spanish conqueror. Guys like Cortez and Pizarro defeated Greet Civilizations like the Aztec and the Incas |
| columbian exchange | Happened when Europeans came to the new world and met Native Americans. they exchanged items that were part of their cultures Foods products even weapons it was both positive and negative for each side but especially negative for the Native Americans. |
| northwest passage | An idea that came out after the New World was discovered. people thought that by going north and west they could go buy water through North America and Asia to trade. Many explorers looked for it especially the French but it dosent exist. |
| missionaries | Priests and other religious people who came to the new world to convert Native Americans to Christianity. They set up missions to accomplish their work |
| Henry Hudson | Explore who sailed from the Netherlands. claimed the Hudson River Valley ( and what's now New York) for the Dutch. |
| New world and old world | North and South America are the "new world" Europe, Asia and Africa are the old world |
| hemisphere | A half of the Earth, the United States is located in the Western hemisphere |
