Force and Motion

Science Unit 4

TermDefinition
Cause an event or process that leads to a result or change
collision the moment when two objects hit each other
effect a result or change that happens because of an event or process
acceleration the rate of change of velocity
exert to apply a force
force a push or a pull that can change the motion of an object
friction a force between an object and the surface it is moving over
infer to reach a conclusion using evidence and reasoning
kinetic energy energy of motion
mass the amount of matter that makes up an object
potential energy energy that is stored in a system or object
system a group of interacting elements forming a complex whole
energy the ability of a system to do work. it is required for changes to happen.
Newton's First Law of Motion An object at rest will stay at rest and an object in motion will stay in motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
Newton's Second Law of Motion The acceleration of an object depends on the net force action on the object and the mass of the object.
Newton's Third Law of Motion Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.
motion the action or process of moving or changing position
linear graphs a graph that is a straight line
nonlinear graph a graph that is not a straight line
net force the combination of all the forces acting on an object. It can be "0" if the object is not moving.
balanced forces do not cause a change in motion. They are equal in strength but opposite in direction.
inertia maintaining a state of rest until acted on by an unbalanced force
unbalanced forces are not equal and cause a change in motion
velocity speed in a particular direction
speed the rate of change of position with respect to time: Distance per time

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
