QuestionAnswer
What is exothermic? Releasing energy from the substance to the surroundings
What is endothermic? Absorbing energy from the surroundings to the substance
What is the equation for thermal energy? J = Mass * Specific Heat * Changes in Temperature
What is the SI Unit for thermal Energy? Joules
If an object's specific heat is higher, does it heats up quickly or slowly? It heats up slowly
If an object's specific heat is lower, does it heats up quickly or slowly? It heats up quickly
What is specific heat? The amount of heat an object takes to raise the teperature of 1 gram of the substance 1 Celcius
What is the sign for exothermic reaction? Negative
What is the sign for endothermic reaction? Positive
If an object absorbs energy, does it becomes hotter or colder? Hotter
If an object releases energy, does it becomes hotter or cooler? Colder
What is the phase change from Solid to Liquid? Melting
What is the phase change from Liquid to Gas? Boiling/ Evaporation
What is the phase change (from Gas to Liquid) that occur when the mirror fogs up? Condensation
What is the phase change from Gas to Solid? Deposition
What is the phase change (Solid to Gas) that occurs when ice "disappears" in the freezer? Sublimation
What is the boiling point for water? 100 Celsius
What is the freezing point for water? 0 Celsius
What is thermochemistry? The study of heat changes that occur during chemical reaction and physical changes of state.
How do we find the change in teperature? Final temp. - Intial temp.
How do you find the specific heat? C = q/ m * changes of temperature
What is the unit for "q" ? Heat energy
What is the unit for "m"? Mass
What is the unit for change in temperature? delta T
Where does boiling happen, in the water or on the surface of the water? In the water
Where does evaporation happen, in the water or the surface of the water? On the surface of the water
How does perspiration help cool your body? The sweat takes away heat energy from your body, and evaporates
Is perspiration a phase of change? No
What is the phase change (Liquid to Solid) that occurs when heat is removed from a liquid Freezing
What is the phase change that keeps your body cool ? Evaporation
Does condensation absorb or release energy? Release energy
Is freezing endothermic or exothermic process? Exothermic
Does melting absorbs or release energy? Absorbs energy
Is boiling/ evaporation exotthermic or endothermic process? Endtohermic

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
