Regicide The killing or murder of a king
The amendment process two ways to ammend ( change) the constitution
The constitution First(most common) way -2/3rd approval by both houses of congress -67 senators -290 reps -approval of 3/4ths of US states -38 states
Second way of the constitution -2/3rds of state legislators vote for “convention of states” - approval of 3/4ths of delegates at convention
The men who made the constitution -55 delegates -average age:’42 - more than 1/2 were lawyers -only some had great wealth - most served in public office Key figures: George Washington, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton
Virginia plan Population based representation -anchor entire government to the people
New Jersey plan - equal representation for all states - argued the Virginia plan would allow bigger states to dominate gov’t at the expense of smaller states
Connecticut compromise - house of reps clover house - population based -senate (upper house) - 2 senators
3/5ths compromise Problem: should the enzlaved count towards a states population? Solution- the enslaved would count as 3/5ths of a person - this gave southerners more representatives and electoral votes - included to ensure southern support for the constitution
Other ways the constitution deals with slavery -fugitive slave law - states needed to return an enslaged person who ran away - the federal gov’t could not outlaw the importation of slaves for 20 years (1808) - southerners agreed to this bc they could breed new slaves - raised price for enslaved
Federalism The division between states and the national government - anti federalists opposed of the constitution - federalists- supported the ratification of the constitution
Bill of rights - first 10 amendments to the constitution - put together by James Madison -focused on individual rights against the gov’t
1st amendment Protects: Speech, press, assembly, petition, religion
Freedom of religion The right to practice any or no religion
Establishment clause Congress cannot establish an official national religion or favor one religion over another - separation of church and state
Freedom of speech Protects the right to express our ideas and opinions openly . Freedom to criticize our government and government officials -
Slander False statements about someone
Freedom of the press The right of newspapers, magazines, etc., to report news without being controlled by the government
Libel Rumors that damage a person’s reputation are not included in freedom of press
Freedom of assembly Freedom to hold meetings, have the right to meet to discuss problems to protest so as long as it is peaceful
Freedom of petition The right to ask the government to address your concerns
Mollycoddle An oversensitive person
Some exceptions Red flag laws -convicted felons may not own firearms -fully automatic weapons are illegal -certain spaces are not included: -schools -churches -stadiums -airport
