QuestionAnswer
What is the normal pH range of blood? This is the range the body must maintain for cells to function normally.
What happens in respiratory acidosis? CO₂ builds up because breathing is slowed or impaired, causing the blood to become too acidic.
What causes metabolic alkalosis? Loss of acids (vomiting), too many antacids, or excess bicarbonate can make the blood too alkaline.
How do the kidneys help correct acidosis? They secrete hydrogen ions and reabsorb bicarbonate to raise the pH back to normal.
What is the main chemical buffer system in the body? The bicarbonate buffer system, which helps resist sudden pH changes.
What is the main function of the lymphatic system? To return excess fluid to the bloodstream, filter out pathogens, and support immune responses.
What is lymph made of? Clear fluid containing water, proteins, lymphocytes, and waste products from tissues.
What do lymph nodes do? They filter lymph, trap pathogens, and activate immune cells (B and T cells).
What are natural killer (NK) cells? Specialized lymphocytes that destroy virus-infected cells and tumor cells without needing prior exposure.
How is lymph moved through the body? By muscle contractions, breathing movements, and one-way valves that prevent backflow.
