| Term | Definition |

| Primary Election | Election to choose a party's candidates for each office to compete in the general election |
| General Election | A regular state or national election to choose and fill statewide and national offices (senators, house of representatives, president etc.) |
| Suffrage | the right to vote. Example: Women's suffrage is the right for women to vote. |
| Ballot | The official form provided to voters that they use to cast their votes in an election. |
| Symbolism | the use of sounds or images that have strong positive or negative appeal often creating an emotional response. |
| Public Opinion | The ideas and attitudes that people hold about elected officials, candidates, government, and public issues. |
| Mass Media | Methods of communication that reach large numbers of people |
| Public Policy | The decisions and actions a government takes to solve problems in the community |
| Interest Group | Organization of people who share a point of view about an issue and unite to promote their beliefs |
| Nonpartisan | A person or group that has no ties to a political party and does not favor one party over another |
| Bias | A person's beliefs about another person or group that may not be based on facts and may affect the person's judgment |
| Propaganda | Messages that use biased or misleading ideas, information, or rumors to influence opinion. |
| Patriotic | Having or showing love, loyalty, and support to one's country |
| Executive Order | Rule or command the president issues that has the force of law |
| Delegated Powers/Enumerated Powers | Powers that the Constitution grants tot he federal government |
| Reserved Powers | Powers that the Constitution does not give to the federal government but saves or sets aside for the states. State Powers |
| Concurrent Powers | Powers shared by the State and Federal governments like taxes |
| Implied Powers | Power of the US Congress that is not specifically stated in the US Constitution |
| Elastic Clause | Clause in Article 1, Section 8, of the Constitution that gives Congress the right to make any laws "necessary and proper" to carry out its expressed powers. |
| Electoral College | A group of people originally named by each state legislature, but now chosen by voters, to select the president and vice president |
| Elector | Person appointed by a political party to vote in presidential elections for the president and vice president |
| Recall | A special election in which citizens can vote to remove an official from office before the term ends |
| Referendum | Procedure by which citizens vote on state or local laws |
| Interest Groups | Organizations of people who share a point of view about an issue and unite to promote their beliefs |
| Watchdog Role | The role of keeping government honest and accountable by reporting on illegal practices or waste to the public |
| Political Party | An organized group of voters with broad common interests and ideas about government who want to influence or control government decision making by electing the party's candidates to public offices. Republicans and Democrats |
