How did nationalism cause WWI? -Nationalism was very strong in both Germany and France. Serbian nationalists looked to Russia to protect them from Austria-Hungary. Serbians were Slavic and Russia was the protector of all Slavic nations.
How did imperialism cause WWI? Nations competed for more land, colonies and raw materials. Great Britain and Germany competed industrially, which led to these nations needing more raw materials.
How did militarism cause war? With militarism, countries were building up their militaries. This is very threatening to other countries.
Why were new countries created with the Treaty of Versailles? Many different ethnic groups wanted their own countries. Like Polish people living in germany and Russia wanted their own country- Poland was created.
Trench Warfare problems Mines, barbed wire ,horrible living conditions, rats, boredom, trench foot, great slaughter, no gains, stalemate.
Imperialism in Africa Africa was rich in natural resources causing a scramble for Africa. The Europeans easily conquered Africa.
France and the Treaty of Versailles George Clemenceau (PM of France) wanted to crush the Germans so that they could never again invade France.
Peace without victory President Wilson call to the fighting nations after the war to have peace in Europe and that neither side would impose harsh terms on the other nations. Wilson hoped that all nations would join a "league for peace".

Sinking of the Lusitania (1915) A German U-Boat sank the British passenger liner Lusitania (which was actually carrying ammunition) despite the American civilian passengers onboard.

How did alliances lead to WWI? The existing alliances dragged nations into the war. Germany was brought into the war when its ally, Austria-Hungary, declared war on Serbia. Russia was allied with Serbia and France.
New countries after WWI Poland, Finland, Turkey, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Austria
Reparations As part of the Treaty of Versailles, Germany was ordered to pay fines to the Allies to repay the costs of the war. Opposed by the U.S., it quickly lead to a severe depression in Germany.
Armistice An agreement to stop fighting.
Archduke Franz Ferdinand heir to the Austria-Hungarian throne who was assassinated in Sarajevo.
President Woodrow Wilson president during WWI, wanted the U.S. to remain neutral
Technology of WWI: The technology of WWI was very different from the way previous wars have been fought. The new technology included submarines, tanks, airplanes, machine guns and poison gas. These new weapons led to more casualties.
Propaganda Ideas spread to influence public opinion for or against a cause.
Why did Gavrilo Princip assassinate Archduke Franz Ferdinand? Gavrilo Princip was a Serbian who thought that Serbians living in the Austro- Hungarian empire should join Serbia.

Treaty of Versailles Treaty that officially ended WWI. It is particularly known for its harsh reparations towards the Germans after World War I. Wilson (U.S) is seen as the peacemaker. France & England wanted Germany punished.
President Wilson's 14 points Focused on establishing future peace and a workable balance of power
Trench Warfare Fighting with trenches, mines, and barbed wire. Horrible living conditions, great slaughter, no gains, stalemate, used in WWI.
Where was the Western Front located? France and Belgium
The Western Front in WWI Trench Warfare, small land gains, and ended in a bloody stalemate. Germany vs. GB and France.
Why did the U.S. enter World War I? German U-Boats were sinking American ships, Zimmerman Note, President Wilson wanted to make the World Safe for Democracy

Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand This was the spark that started World War I. Archduke Ferdinand, the Austrian crown prince, was murdered on June 28, 1914, by a Serbian nationalist while visiting Sarajevo, Bosnia.
