What was the 3/5 Compromise? slaves were counted as 3/5 of a person in the population count
What is the Preamble? the introduction to the Constitution
What is the purpose of the U.S. Constitution? to protect the rights of the people
What are the first ten amendments called? The Bill of Rights
Name five rights that the first ten amendments provide to citizens. The right to free speech, free press, free religion, bear arms, not testify against yourself, refuse quartering for soldiers, not endure cruel and unusual punishment, right to a grand jury, etc.
What are the three branches of government and what are their purposes? Legislative branch makes laws, executive branch carries out laws, and judicial interprets laws.
What is federalism? Federalism was support of the Constitution and saying that power should be shared between the national and state governments.
What are the qualifications to be a representative in the House and how long are the terms? Must be a U.S. citizen for 7 years, 25 year age minimum, 2 year terms
What are the qualifications to be a senator and how long are the terms? Must be a U.S. citizen for 9 years, 30 year age minimum, 6 year terms
What are the qualifications to be president and how long are the terms? Must be born a U.S. citizen, must be 35 years old, 4 year terms, 2 term maximum
What system is used to elect the president? The electoral college.
How is the number of representatives for the Senate and House chosen? The Senate is 2 representatives per state and the House is based on population.
What are the courts of the judicial branch from lowest to highest? 1. District Courts 2. Appeals Courts 3. Supreme Courts
What does it mean to impeach? to accuse
What are two powers of the executive branch? commander-in-chief in military, veto/sign bills, etc.
What are two powers of the legislative branch? declare war, approve treaties, approve judges, etc.
Why are checks and branches in the Constitution? So that one branch doesn't have too much power.
What are two examples of checks and balances? 1. Congress can override vetoes 2. Congress can impeach the president etc.
What are the steps to turn a bill into a law? 1. Bill is introduced to House 2 Bill is sent to House Com., debated and voted on 3. Sent to House (debated/voted) 4. Sent to Senate 5. Sent to Senate Com. (debated/voted) 6. House and Senate compromise on bill and approve 7. president signs/vetoes
What can Congress do if the president vetoes? Congress can override the veto with a 2/3 majority
Name a power belonging only to the national government. printing money, etc.
Name a power belonging only to the state government. establishing schools, etc.
Name a power they share. protect public safety
