TermDefinition
Absolute Brightness compares how bright objects in space, like stars, appear.
Apparent Brightness how bright an object in space appears from the Earth
Asteroid a rocky object that orbits the sun
asteroid belt the region in the solar system that contains many asteroids
celestial object an object that exists in the universe, such as a plant or star.
Comet a lump of frozen gases rock and dust that orbits the sun
crater a large bowl-shaped hole in the ground normally caused by explosions or impacts
Galaxy a system of millions of stars, and huge clouds of dust and gas, held together by gravity and the force of attraction
Gaseous an adjective used to describe a substance that has the characteristics of a gas
Meteor space debris, or a piece of a comet or asteroid, that heats up as it passes through the Earth's atmosphere and can appear as a streak of light in the sky
Meteorite a meteoroid that has passed through the Earth’s atmosphere and hit the ground
Meteoroid a small piece of rock or ice that has broken off an asteroid or comet
Near-Earth object (NEO) an object in space, such as an asteroid, whose orbit will bring it close to the Earth
Orbit the curved path a planet or object takes as it travels through space
Planet a large, spherical object in space that orbits a star and is large enough that its gravity clears other objects from its orbit
Reflectivity the property of reflecting light
Relative Dating a method used to identify the approximate age of a rock layer by determining the ages of the layers above and below it
Solar System the group of planets and moons that orbit the Sun
