Rhetorical Terms

| diction | word choice that creates tone, attitude, as well as meaning |
| didactic | writing whose purpose is to instruct or teach |
| discourse | spoken or written language, including literary works |
| dissonance | harsh or grating sounds that do not go together |
| ellipsis | a mark that indicates omission of letters and words |
| emotional appeal | when a writer appeals to reader's emoitions, PATHOS |
| epigraph | the use of quotation at the beginning of a work that hints at the theme |
| epistrophe | repetition of a word or expression at the end of successive phrases, clauses, sentences |
| ethical appeal | when a writer tries to persuade the audience to respect/believe him, ETHOS |
| euphemism | a more acceptable and usually more pleasant way of saying something that might be otherwise inappropriate |
