Rhetorical Terms

QuestionAnswer
denotation literal meaning of a word as defined
description using words to create a visual image
diction word choice that creates tone, attitude, as well as meaning
didactic writing whose purpose is to instruct or teach
discourse spoken or written language, including literary works
dissonance harsh or grating sounds that do not go together
ellipsis a mark that indicates omission of letters and words
emotional appeal when a writer appeals to reader's emoitions, PATHOS
epigraph the use of quotation at the beginning of a work that hints at the theme
epistrophe repetition of a word or expression at the end of successive phrases, clauses, sentences
ethical appeal when a writer tries to persuade the audience to respect/believe him, ETHOS
euphemism a more acceptable and usually more pleasant way of saying something that might be otherwise inappropriate
