| Dehydration | Used to describe the condition that results from exces-sive loss of body water |
| Turgor | Loss of skin resiliency or pressure |
| Edema | A classic example of fluid imbalance and may be defined as the presence of abnormally large amounts of fluid in the intercel-lular tissue spaces of the body. |
| Hypochloremia | Chloride ions are usually excreted in the urine as a potassium salt, and there-fore chloride defi ciency |
| Hypokalemia | Potassium deficit- occurs whenever there is cell breakdown, as in starvation, burns, trauma, or dehydration. |
| Hypervolemia | An expansion of fluid volume in the body. |
| Hypovolemia | Inadequate fluid volume in the extracel-lular compartment |
| Hypercalcemia | When blood calcium levels rise above normal limits. |
| Hypokalemia | A condition in which potassium is lost from the body, resulting in a plasma potassium level below 3.5 mEq/L. Kalium is the Latin word for “potassium.” |
