What is a synapse? A synapse is the junction where one neuron communicates with another cell through chemical neurotransmitters or electrical impulses (Zimmerman & Snow).
What is the purpose of the action potential? An action potential is a rapid electrical change that travels along a neuron to transmit signals from one part of the body to another (Zimmerman & Snow).
What organs make up the central nervous system (CNS)? The CNS consists of the brain and spinal cord and serves as the body’s main control and processing center (Zimmerman & Snow).
What is the autonomic nervous system (ANS) responsible for? The ANS controls involuntary functions such as heart rate, digestion, breathing, gland activity, and smooth muscle action (Zimmerman & Snow).
What are special senses? Special senses include vision, hearing, equilibrium, taste, and smell; they rely on specialized receptors located in the head (Zimmerman & Snow).
How do hormones travel in the endocrine system? Hormones are secreted by endocrine glands and travel through the bloodstream to regulate metabolism, growth, reproduction, and stress responses (Zimmerman & Snow).
What is the main function of the heart? The heart pumps blood throughout the body to deliver oxygen and nutrients while removing wastes such as carbon dioxide (Zimmerman & Snow).
What are the major components of blood? Blood consists of plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets—each essential for transport, defense, and clotting (Zimmerman & Snow).
What is the primary function of the lymphatic system? It drains excess tissue fluid, transports fats, and houses immune cells that defend against pathogens (Zimmerman & Snow).
Where does most nutrient absorption occur during digestion? The small intestine is the primary site where nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream after enzymatic breakdown (Zimmerman & Snow).
