TermDefinition
Partial Pressure Pressure exerted by an one gas in a mixture of gases or in a liquid.
Pulmonary gas exchange oxygen diffuses in the pulmonary capillaries and carbon dioxide is exchanged in its place to be exhaled
Hemoglobin (Hgb) iron-rich protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to the body and returns carbon dioxide for removal
Carbon dioxide-hemoglobin reaction Carbon dioxide can bind to an amine group in an amino acid with a hemoglobin molecule to form carbaminohemoglobin and a hydrogen ion.
Bicarbonate Crucial ion that acts a natural pH buffer in the body, vital for transporting carbon dioxide and maintaining acid-base balance
Systemic gas exchange Process where oxygen-rich blood from the lungs releases oxygen to the body's tissues and picks up carbon dioxide, a waste product, to be transported back to the lungs
Bohr effect Right shift of the oxygen-hemoglobin dissociation curve resulting from increased pco2
Haldane effect Increased total CO2 loading caused by a decrease in po2
Antibodies Y-Shaped proteins produced by plasma cells that identify and neutralize foreign invaders alike bacteria and viruses by binding specifically to their antigens
Effector Cells Activated immune cells that carry out specific functions to eliminate pathogens or infected cells during an immune response
Naiive B or T Cell that is inactive, meaning that it has not yet been exposed to a specific antigen
