What is the main function of the digestive system? To break down food into nutrients the body can absorb and eliminate waste
What are the two types of digestion? Mechanical digestion and chemical digestion
What organ starts mechanical digestion of food? The mouth, it starts with mastication
Which enzyme in saliva begins carbohydrate digestion? Salivary amylase
What is the role of the esophagus? it transports food from the mouth to the stomach
Which stomach cells secrete hydrochloric acid? Parietal cells
What is the function of bile and which organ produces it? Bile emulsifies fats; it is produced by the liver and stored in the gallbladder
What is the role of the large intestine? It absorbs water and electrolytes and forms feces
What are villi and microvilli? They are finger like projections in the small intestine that increase surface area for absorption
What are digestive enzymes and what do they do? They are proteins that catalyze the breakdown of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats into absorbable forms
