Stack #4587391
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Ph | A measure of how acidic or basic something is. Lower pH more acidic, higher pH more basic |
| Acid | A substance that releases hydrogen ions (H+) in solution |
| Base (Alkali) | A substance that accepts hydrogen ions or releases hydroxide ions (OH-) |
| Buffer System | A chemical system that keeps the pH stable by absorbing or releasing H+. The main one in the body is the bicarbonate buffer system. |
| Bicarbonate (HCO3-) | A base that helps neutralize acids. Controlled mostly by the kidneys. |
| Carbonic Acid (H2CO3) | Formed when CO2 mixes with water. Controlled by the lungs because breathing affects CO2 levels. |
| CO2 carbon dioxide | Acts like an acid in the body. If you retain CO2, your pH drops |
| Respiratory Acidosis | Low pH due to too much CO2. Happens with hypoventilation (not breathing enough) |
| Respiratory Alkalosis | High pH due to too little CO2. Happens with hyperventilation (breathing too fast) |
| Metabolic Acidosis | Low pH because the body lost too much bicarbonate or produced too many acids |
