StudyStack Set 2

TermDefinition
Ligand-Gated Ion Channels: A protein transporter that is opened or closed by a ligand (like a neurotransmitter) to their receptor, and through which a certain type of ion may pass through the membrane.
Resting Membrane Potential: Electrical difference between the potential of the two sides of the membrane of a resting neuron, which is normally approximately -70 mV, due to the ionic difference between the ion concentrations within and without the cell.
Action Potential: One of the signals that can be sent is a fast temporary change in membrane potential that propagates along a neuron.
Central Nervous System (CNS): The portion of the nervous system, which is made up of the brain and spinal cord, which process the sensory information and determines the response.
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS): This is the component of the nervous system beyond the brain and the spinal cord, which transmits sensory information and motor commands to and from the CNS.
Autonomic Nervous System (ANS): One of the branches of the PNS which regulates the autonomous body processes, such as heart rate, digestion, respiratory rate, etc. which also further subdivides into sympathetic and parasympathetic.
Endocrine System: A gland system which releases hormones directly to the blood, which controls processes like metabolism, growth, and mood.
Hormones: These chemical substances that are released by the endocrine glands in the bloodstream to control different bodily processes.
Receptors: Protein molecules with specific binding that can be found at the cell membrane or within the cells that bind with particular hormones or neurotransmitters and cause a physiological response.
Cardiovascular System: The system which is made up of the heart, blood vessels and blood which circulate blood throughout the body to supply oxygen and nutrients and to eliminate waste.
Pulmonary Circulation: The path through which blood goes round the body to other organs such as lungs and back to the heart whereby blood becomes oxygenated and carbon dioxide is eliminated.
Lymphatic System: It is a system of tissues and organs (such as lymph nodes and vessels) that are used to rid the body of toxins, waste, and other undesirable materials, as well as a part of the immune system.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
