| alveolus | literally, a small cavity, alveoli of lungs are micrscopic saclike dilations of terminal bronchioles, gas exchange in the lungs occurs across the membranes of the alveoli |
| bronchial tree | the trachea, two primary bronchi, and their many branches |
| concha | scroll-shaped bone that forms a ledge projecting into the nasal cavity from it's lateral wall |
| costal surface | region of the lungs that lies against the ribs, rounded to match contour of thoracic cavity |
| epiglottis | lidlike cartiglage overhanging the entrance to the larynx |
| hilum | slit on medial surface of each lung where primary bronchi and pulmonary vessels enter ; slit on medial surface of each kidney where blood vessels and other structures enter the kidney |
| larynx | voice box located just below the pharynx, the largest piece of cartilage |
| oropharynx | portion of the pharynx that is located behind the mouth |
| pharynx | tubelike structure that extends from the base of the skull to the esophagus, also called the throat |
| primary bronchus | either of the two branches of the trachea that entersn the lungs |
