What causes a ligand-gated ion channel to open? It opens when a chemical messenger (ligand), such as a neurotransmitter, binds to it.
What is the main role of the sympathetic nervous system? It prepares the body for “fight or flight” by increasing heart rate and energy use.
What is the main function of the parasympathetic nervous system? It promotes “rest and digest” activities, slowing the heart and helping digestion.
Which gland releases insulin? The pancreas.
What does parathyroid hormone (PTH) do? It raises blood calcium levels by breaking down bone.
Where does blood travel in pulmonary circulation? From the heart to the lungs and back to the heartTo deliver oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the body and return oxygen-poor blood to the heart.
What is the purpose of systemic circulation? To deliver oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the body and return oxygen-poor blood to the heart.
What is lymph? A clear fluid that comes from tissue fluid and returns to the bloodstream through lymphatic vessels.
What does the diaphragm do during inhalation? It contracts and moves downward, increasing lung volume.
What is the function of bile? Bile emulsifies fats so digestive enzymes can break them down more easily.
