TermDefinition
Ligand-Gated Ion Channel A protein channel that opens when a neurotransmitter binds to it, letting ions to enter or exit the neuron.
Action Potential A fast, electrical signal produced by neurons when voltage-gated sodium and potassium channels open and close.
Parasympathetic System The "rest" part of the ANS that slows the heart rate and promotes digestion.
Hemoglobin A protein in the red blood cells that binds oxygen for transport throughout the body.
Hormone A chemical messenger that is released by the endocrine glands that travel trough the blood to the affected target tissues.
Alveoli Small air sacs in the lungs where oxygen and co2 exchange occurs.
Tidal Volume The amount of air moved into or out of the lungs during a normal, quiet breath.
Chemical Digestion The enzymatic breakdown of food into small molecules such as amino acids, glucose, and fatty acids.
Autonomic Nervous System The automatic part of the nervous system that regulates the cardiac muscle, smooth muscle, and glands.
Lymph Node A small immune organ that filters lymph and houses immune cells to fight infection.
