| Digestive System | Major organ system that breaks down food into nutrients that can be used by the body's cells |
| Organs of the Gastrointestinal Tract | Mouth, Pharynx, Esophagus, Stomach, Small Intestine, & Large Intestine |
| Gastrointestinal Tract (GI) | The muscular digestive tube that winds through the body, extending from the mouth to the anus |
| Peristalsis | Means of propulsion through the alimentary canal; waves of contraction and relaxation of smooth muscle in organ walls |
| Ingestion | Taking of food into the mouth |
| Absorption | Transport of digested end products from the lumen of the alimentary canal into the blood and lymphatic capillaries located in the wall of the canal |
| Defecation | Elimination of indigestible substances from the body as feces |
| Mucosa | Inner most layer of the GI tract wall |
| Submucosa | A layer of connective tissue containing major blood and lymphatic vessels and nerve fibers that stimulate the digestive tract |
| Rugae | Folds in the stomach which increase surface area and allow for stomach expansion |
| Villi | Small finger-shaped structures that cover the inner surface of the small intestine and provide a large surface area through which digested food is absorbed |
| Microvilli | Hair like projections on the surface of the villi that increase the surface area |
