| Epicardium | inner layer of the pericardium that covers the surface of the heart |
| Sinoatrial node | the heart's pacemaker, where the impulse conduction of the heart normally starts, located in the wall of the right atrium |
| atrioventricular node | a small mass of special cardiac muscle tissue, part of the conduction system of the heart |
| P wave | electrocardiogram deflection that represents depolarization of the atria |
| QRS complex | electocardiogram deflection that represents depolarization of the ventricles |
| T wave | electrocardiogram deflection that results that reflects the repolarization of the ventricles |
| cardiac cycle | complete heartbeat consisting of diastole and systole of both atria and both ventricles |
| diastole | relaxation of the heart, during which it fills with blood, opposite of systole |
| cardiomyopathy | general term for disease of the myocardium causing enlargement |
| tachycardia | rapid heart rhythm |
